Here is a link to the audio introduction to week 4: [ MP3 ]. It's 17 minutes long, and I hope you'll listen to the very end, especially if you need a little pep talk before approaching the "difficult" poetry of Gertrude Stein. Along the way I have something to say about Stein's verbal portrait of Picasso, and of the whole modernist approach to portraiture generally. Think about Williams's "Portrait of Lady" in this respect. WCW incorporates doubts about the efficacy of his or anyone's ability to present a portrait of a person. Stein has fewer doubts about her capacity to find some kind of portrait that will do the job, but she clearly rejects traditional ideas of the portrait. What better a way to attempt this than to portray Picasso, who has his own means of doubting traditional portrayal. In a recent TV interview, Senator Dick Durbin of Illinois - well known for his criticism of high tuitions at U.S. colleges and universities - talks about his participation in ModPo. Here is your link to the video. If you want to hear the ModPo segment, scroll ahead to 13:45.
